What is the World Test Championship?

The World Test Championship is a new competition introduced by the ICC in 2019 to increase the significance of test cricket in an era dominated by franchise tournaments like the Indian Premier League. It is played over two years, with each country playing three series of five-day tests – one at home and two away – plus four limited-overs matches and two T20 internationals. The winner is decided by the team that earns most points over the course of the tournament.

The final is being held at the “home of cricket”, Lord’s in London. As a result, there are high expectations for a sold-out crowds on the first day and possibly all four days of the match. However, this could be a huge problem if India fail to reach the final, as ticket sales will likely fall.

This year’s tournament saw South Africa and Australia both finish on top of the standings with six wins each, although the Proteas were better placed due to a superior head-to-head record. The Aussies’ campaign included a 5-0 whitewash of Pakistan at home, a 3-0 victory over India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and a 3-1 win against Sri Lanka on their tour.

In the end, it was a dramatic affair as Temba Bavuma lifted the mace from ICC chief executive Jay Shah to thunderous applause and a shower of champagne. He was not the only one celebrating, either, as many of the players milled about on the outfield with their families and bounced their children on their knee.
