World Series Highlights

The World Series was filled with tense, tight games that didn’t always live up to the hype, but there was no shortage of memorable moments. Here’s a look back at some of the best ones.

The Dodgers were in a five-run hole at the start of the fifth inning against Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, but they staged a startling rally to tie the score and take the lead. The two key blows were sacrifice flies from Gavin Lux and Mookie Betts, allowing the Dodgers to erase the deficit on a night that wasn’t supposed to be easy.

The Yankees were the defending champions, and they looked like they would win the World Series in a rout. But the Dodgers had other plans, and they got one of the most dominant performances in Series history from pitcher Sandy Koufax. He threw two complete games and made key defensive plays, including a diving catch in left field in Game 7 to preserve a 4-0 victory.

Reggie Jackson entered the Series in a slump and had been benched by manager Billy Martin during the ALCS. But he found his groove in the Series, hitting home runs in Game 3, 4, and 5. In the latter game, he offered at just three pitches and drove a 105-mph fastball into the center field bleachers for a humongous home run to earn himself the nickname “Mr. October.” It was the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history.
