World Series Highlights

The first World Series game to be played entirely in the daylight hours was a memorable one. It featured a series of exciting lead changes, nail-biting turns of events, and a dramatic walk-off home run by Carlton Fisk for the Red Sox in a 7-6 victory in the 12th inning of a decisive World Series Game 7.

This year’s series was also notable for its international flavor, which reflects the fact that baseball has become a global sport and that many of the best players from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Rim are capable of reaching the major leagues. In addition, the recent collapse in relations between the United States and Cuba has made it easier for talented Cuban ballplayers to defect from their homeland and join the major leagues.

After a disastrous inning in which they lost five runs and trailed by two in the eighth, the Dodgers rallied against Yankee reliever Tommy Kahnle and his ineffective staff to win the game 5-4. The comeback was sparked by the heroics of Anthony Volpe, whose leadoff double against Yankee reliever Bob Stanley set the stage for Alex Verdugo’s tie-breaking RBI single.

Washington had not hosted a World Series since 1933, and for a city that went 33 years without having its own team in the postseason, the idea of a big, noisy crowd rocking the nation’s capital was beyond anyone’s wildest dreams. But the Astros, led by a series of excellent performances by starter Justin Verlander and manager Hinch’s outstanding bullpen, put a stop to any parade plans for Constitution Avenue and temporarily stopped the Nationals from marching down the road to a World Series title.
