Formula 1 standings are updated after each race. Those who finish in the top 10 receive points for themselves and their team, while drivers who win races earn an extra bonus point. At the end of the season, the driver and team who score the most points are named champions. If a driver changes teams during a season, their points from the previous team are still counted towards the championship.
The McLaren of Oscar Piastri is the current Formula 1 drivers’ championship leader after he took a huge step towards winning the title at the Dutch Grand Prix with a lights-to-flag victory. However, team-mate Lando Norris was left frustrated as his engine failed seven laps from the end in Zandvoort, handing Piastri a 34-point lead with nine rounds remaining.
In 2025, F1 drivers are able to score a maximum of 25 points in each race – one for winning the Grand Prix, 18 points for second place and 15 points for third. A further bonus point is awarded for the fastest lap, although this will be abolished from this season onwards.
